Carrick Institute CNS-10: Examination & Rehabilitation in Functional Neurology
About This Event
CNS-10 turns the neurological exam into a localization tool and pairs each finding with a rehabilitation strategy. It's a level 4 (specialist) module of Carrick Institute's CNS curriculum worth 25 CE hours, and Carrick describes the content as guided by Dr. Matthew Antonucci. It's held at the Carrick Institute Learning Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida (Orlando area; fly into MCO). Homewood Suites and the Hampton Inn & Suites next door are a one- to two-minute walk away.
The exam portion moves from history-based localization by chief complaint to bedside screening for ionic and metabolic problems (electrolytes, B-vitamin deficiencies, acid-base disturbances), then through the motor and sensory exam, the visual system (blind spot mapping, pupillary reflexes, RAPD), and cranial nerves I–XII. It goes on to oculomotor testing (nystagmus classification, gaze, fixation, vergence, tropias and phorias, the Parks-Bielschowsky three-step), the full vestibular exam (head impulse, VOR gain, dynamic visual acuity, calorics, Fukuda, subjective visual vertical), frontal, parietal, and temporal lobe testing, and tremor and hyperkinetic disorder examination.
The rehabilitation portion covers BPPV diagnosis and repositioning for every canal (Epley, Gufoni, Barbecue, half-somersault), vestibular adaptation and gaze stabilization progressions, saccadic, pursuit, and convergence training, and frontal and parietal lobe rehab using tools like the Interactive Metronome. It also teaches electroneural modulation (galvanic vestibular stimulation, TENS, interferential, and auricular and carotid vagal stimulation) and advanced management of mal de debarquement, Ménière's disease, and visual motion sensitivity.
Carrick lists Dr. Thomas van den Hof, Dr. John McClaren, Dr. Ryan Harvey, and Dr. Nicole Quodling as faculty. Schedule (Eastern): Friday 2:00–6:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM, Sunday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM. Dress is casual (no ripped clothing or open-toed shoes). Tuition includes three months of course access and Medline access.
Learning Objectives
- •Localize neurological dysfunction using history and systematic exam findings
- •Assess cranial nerve, oculomotor, vestibular, and autonomic function at the bedside
- •Identify BPPV canal variants and select the right repositioning maneuver
- •Design progressive vestibular, saccadic, and convergence rehabilitation programs
- •Apply galvanic, TENS, and vagal electroneural modulation with appropriate dosing
