Carrick Institute CNS-09: Neurology of Movement
About This Event
CNS-09 is the movement disorders module in Carrick Institute's new 13-module CNS functional neurology curriculum. It's a level 4 (specialist) course worth 25 CE hours, and it gives clinicians a mechanistic framework for interpreting tremor, dystonia, Parkinsonism, and other complex movement presentations. It's held at the Carrick Institute Learning Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida (Orlando area; fly into MCO). Homewood Suites and the Hampton Inn & Suites next door are a one- to two-minute walk away.
The course starts with motor control theory: forward models and the MOSAIC framework of motor prediction, state estimation, cerebellar error correction, sensory cancellation, and the roles of M1, premotor cortex, and SMA. From there it maps basal ganglia anatomy and circuit logic, including the direct, indirect, and hyperdirect pathways, the four cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops, and cerebellar–basal ganglia interplay. The clinical half covers movement-disorder terminology and a structured assessment flow (TUG and dual-task gait among other tools); tremor classification (essential, cerebellar, orthostatic, rubral, and more); hyperkinetic disorders such as chorea, hemiballismus, myoclonus, tics, and restless legs; dystonia; drug-induced movement disorders; Parkinson's disease and other hypokinetic disorders; and timing neuroscience. It closes with functional movement disorders and rehabilitation strategies including rhythmic auditory stimulation and mirror visual feedback.
Carrick lists Dr. Igor Dijkers, Dr. David Traster, and Dr. Nicole Quodling as faculty for this course. Schedule (Eastern): Friday 2:00–6:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM, Sunday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM. Dress is casual (no ripped clothing or open-toed shoes). Tuition includes three months of course access and Medline access, and the hours count toward the 300+ needed for neurology fellowship and diplomate exam eligibility.
Learning Objectives
- •Apply motor prediction models, including MOSAIC, to clinical movement analysis
- •Interpret basal ganglia circuitry across the direct, indirect, and hyperdirect pathways
- •Classify and differentiate hyperkinetic and hypokinetic movement disorders
- •Conduct structured clinical assessment of movement disorders with validated tools
- •Integrate timing neuroscience and rhythmic interventions into rehabilitation
