About This Event

Topical analgesics and various taping techniques are routinely used by patients and clinicians for pain control and function. Understanding the pharmacology and clinical application of common OTC and prescription topical analgesics will enable the clinician to advise patients on their appropriate use. In addition, both clinicians and patients use various taping techniques for support and to facilitate recovery. This course will examine the application of traditional taping, sport specific and kinesiology taping techniques in theory and application as the research continues to evolve on the mechanism of action of kinesiology and sports taping. Learn the facts on taping and topicals to better advise patients on their use and potential complications.

TOPICS OF STUDY:

-Review of skin anatomy and nociceptors
-Pharmacology of common OTC and prescription topicals
-Indications for topical use
-Athletic, sport specific and kinesiology tape application and indications
-Virtual examples of taping procedures
-Research on the proposed mechanism of action of kinesiology tape
-Contraindications to topical analgesics and taping

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

-Identify key anatomical structures of the skin and explain the role of nociceptors in pain perception and topical analgesic efficacy
-Evaluate the pharmacological mechanisms, indications, and appropriate clinical applications of common OTC and prescription topical analgesics
-Recognize contraindications and potential adverse effects associated with topical analgesic use to counsel patients appropriately
-Demonstrate proper application techniques for athletic, sport-specific, and kinesiology taping methods based on clinical presentation and patient needs
-Analyze current research on the proposed mechanisms of action for kinesiology and sports taping to differentiate evidence-based practice from marketing claims
