Over the Counter Drugs
About This Event
This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles of pharmacology and toxicology of over-the-counter OTC drugs. Emphasis is on the mechanism of action MOA of the OTC drugs and usage in the chiropractic practice in Oregon. The course covers the action of OTC drugs and other chemicals on the various organ systems of the body. A variety of OTC medications will be covered, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDS. Current applications of pharmacology in chiropractic practice will be emphasized. Completion of this course is a requirement for the qualification in the use of OTC drugs and chiropractic clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
- -Understand the fundamental principles of pharmacology and toxicology as they apply to over-the-counter medications
- -Identify the mechanism of action (MOA) for major classes of OTC drugs, including NSAIDs, antihistamines, decongestants, and gastrointestinal agents
- -Evaluate the effects of OTC drugs and chemicals on various organ systems (cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nervous, respiratory)
- -Apply knowledge of OTC drug interactions and contraindications in chiropractic clinical practice
- -Demonstrate appropriate patient counseling regarding OTC medication use, dosing, and potential adverse effects
- -Comply with Oregon regulations governing chiropractor use and recommendation of OTC medications
