Current Concepts in Lumbar Core Stability

The objective of this course is to present current concepts in core stability for all phases of care, from the acute to return to function. The clinical indications and progressions for mobility and stability dysfunction in the lumbar spine will be presented along with the appropriate exercise selection that the clinician can incorporate immediately. Specifically, the course introduces the use of evidenced based flexion biased exercise principles for lumbar spinal stenosis, the role of neutral spine exercises for ADL’s, and extension biased principles for discogenic conditions and paraspinal deconditioning. The three mechanisms of core stability will be presented as they relate to lumbar spine rehab. Finally, novel technologies to enhance intrinsic core strength and stability will be presented as an introduction to newest rehabilitation frontier: Aesthetic Rehabilitation.

• •Classify lumbar spine conditions by movement bias (flexion, extension, neutral) and select appropriate exercise progressions for each phase of care
• •Apply evidence-based exercise principles for managing lumbar spinal stenosis, discogenic conditions, and paraspinal deconditioning
• •Design core stability progressions that safely advance patients from acute care through return-to-function phases
• •Implement neutral spine exercise strategies for activities of daily living (ADLs) to enhance patient outcomes
• •Evaluate and integrate novel rehabilitation technologies to enhance intrinsic core strength and stability
