110th KAC Annual Convention | Investigating Radiology Errors in Spine and Appendicular Conditions with Dr. Beverly Harger
About This Event
Chiropractors frequently evaluate musculoskeletal and spine conditions where accurate radiologic interpretation is essential for timely diagnosis and effective management. This 2-hour course equips chiropractors with practical tools to recognize common diagnostic pitfalls in imaging of the spine, as well as upper and lower extremity conditions. Using real clinical cases, participants will learn how radiology errors occur, how to spot subtle or easily misinterpreted findings, and what imaging to order.
The course also addresses communication strategies with radiologists, appropriate follow-up intervals, and how cognitive biases affect both readers and ordering clinicians. Clinicians will leave with improved confidence in interpreting reports, identifying red flags, and coordinating timely care to reduce adverse patient outcomes, enhancing their ability to provide comprehensive patient care.
Learning Objectives
- •Identify common radiologic errors and diagnostic pitfalls in spinal imaging, including missed fractures, degenerative changes, and alignment abnormalities
- •Recognize subtle or easily misinterpreted findings in upper and lower extremity imaging that may impact patient management decisions
- •Apply systematic interpretation strategies to review radiologic reports and imaging studies with increased accuracy and confidence
- •Understand the role of cognitive biases (anchoring, confirmation bias, availability heuristic) in radiologic interpretation and clinical decision-making
- •Establish effective communication protocols with radiologists to clarify findings, request additional imaging, and optimize diagnostic outcomes
- •Determine appropriate follow-up imaging intervals and red flag indicators that warrant urgent referral or additional diagnostic workup
- •Develop a clinical framework for ordering appropriate imaging modalities and interpreting results to reduce adverse patient outcomes and enhance comprehensive care
